Question 1

What future setting does the passage assume, and how is it stated?

Accepted Answer

The instructions are explicitly tied to a time “when you come into the land of your habitations, which I give to you” (vv. 1–2). That frames the rules as forward-looking, meant for Israel’s settled life rather than only for immediate wilderness needs. The passage also assumes the land will supply agricultural products—fine flour, oil, and wine—because these are required alongside the animals (vv. 4–7). Even though the text does not describe farming, the listed items make most sense in a stable, land-based economy. The future setting is presented as certain because Yahweh says he is giving the land.

Question 2

Which occasions for offerings are named in v. 3, and what do they have in common?

Accepted Answer

Verse 3 lists offerings brought to “make a sweet savor to Yahweh,” and it names several contexts: (1) to accomplish a vow, (2) as a freewill-offering, and (3) “in your set feasts” (appointed festival times). What they have in common is that they describe recognized moments when an Israelite might bring an animal offering: fulfilling a specific spoken commitment (vow), giving voluntarily beyond obligation (freewill), and participating in communal calendar events (feasts). The verse also indicates these offerings are “by fire,” linking them to altar ritual rather than private gifts or non-altar donations.

Question 3

According to vv. 4–5, what must accompany a lamb offering and in what amounts?

Accepted Answer

For “each lamb” offered as part of the situations described in v. 3, the text requires two additional components besides the animal. First is a grain (meal) offering: one-tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with one-fourth of a hin of oil (v. 4). Second is a drink offering: one-fourth of a hin of wine prepared with the burnt offering or the sacrifice (v. 5). The passage is careful to specify both the substance and the measurement, implying these are not optional extras. The mixing of flour and oil is stated directly as part of the required preparation.

Question 4

How do the required amounts change for a ram in vv. 6–7 compared with a lamb?

Accepted Answer

The passage scales the quantities upward when the animal is a ram. Instead of one-tenth of an ephah of flour (for a lamb), the ram requires two-tenths (v. 6). Instead of one-fourth of a hin of oil, the ram requires one-third (v. 6). And the drink offering increases from one-fourth of a hin of wine to one-third (v. 7). The pattern is consistent: the larger or higher-value animal is matched with larger grain, oil, and wine amounts. The text does not explain why, but it clearly links the scale of accompanying gifts to the chosen animal.

Question 5

What does the phrase “of the herd, or of the flock” add to the instructions in v. 3?

Accepted Answer

The phrase “of the herd, or of the flock” (v. 3) clarifies that the animal offerings in view may come from different categories of domesticated animals. In the immediate section (vv. 4–7) the examples focus on a lamb and a ram, both from the flock, but v. 3 signals the rule belongs to a broader set of altar offerings that can involve herd animals as well. This matters because it shows the instructions are not limited to one narrow kind of offering occasion; they are framed as a general pattern for fire offerings that produce a “sweet savor” to Yahweh in the named contexts.

Question 6

In this passage, what is explicitly said about Yahweh’s role in the land and in the rules?

Accepted Answer

Yahweh is presented as the speaker and authority behind the rules: he speaks to Moses and commands him to instruct Israel (vv. 1–2). Yahweh is also explicitly the giver of the land: “which I give to you” (v. 2). The offerings are directed “to Yahweh,” and the goal language “a sweet savor to Yahweh” appears in vv. 3 and 7. While the text does not explain the theology of sacrifice in detail here, it does explicitly connect land, worship practice, and divine instruction: Israel’s future settlement and its worship procedures are both framed as coming under Yahweh’s direction.
