Some readers take Balaam’s “Yahweh puts [words] in my mouth” as strong compulsion: Balaam is not merely choosing faithfulness but is constrained from speaking anything else. Others read it as a claim about source and authority rather than irresistible force: Balaam frames his speech as God-given to defend himself against Balak’s anger and to set expectations for what he will say next.

A smaller question concerns “blessed them altogether.” Many read it as an emphatic way to say “you’ve done nothing but bless them,” not necessarily that every possible blessing was spoken; others hear it as stressing total reversal—Balak got the opposite result in full.

Why the disagreement exists

The language “puts in my mouth” can describe both (1) where a message comes from and (2) how tightly the speaker is bound to repeat it. The immediate context is a tense negotiation between a king and a paid diviner, so readers weigh whether Balaam is primarily describing divine control or managing political pressure.

What this passage clearly contributes

These verses highlight that Israel’s safety in the story does not depend on Balak’s power or Balaam’s fee. The narrative claim is that Yahweh controls the effective message: the one who supplies the words also sets the limits of what can be spoken (v.12). At the same time, the passage exposes the moral and political expectation Balak brings—religious speech as a service to be purchased—and how that expectation clashes with the claim of Yahweh’s sovereignty over speech and outcome.
