Question 1

What does Balak’s request in verse 13 reveal about what he thinks might affect Balaam’s ability to curse Israel?

Accepted Answer

Balak assumes that changing the circumstances might change the oracle. He specifically focuses on what Balaam can see: from a new place Balaam will see only the “utmost part” (the edge) of Israel, not the whole camp. That implies Balak thinks the visual impression of Israel matters—either by shaping Balaam’s emotional response, by making Israel seem less impressive, or by fitting Balak’s idea of how cursing works. The text does not endorse Balak’s theory; it simply shows Balak trying to engineer a different result after the first attempt failed.

Question 2

How does verse 14 connect this scene to the earlier attempt, and what effect does that repetition have on the story’s tension?

Accepted Answer

Verse 14 repeats the same sacrificial scale: seven altars, with a bull and a ram on each. The repetition links this second try to the first, showing that Balak is not merely relocating—he is restarting the whole ritual process. Story-wise, that raises tension by asking whether a new setting plus renewed offerings can change what is spoken. At the same time, the repeated pattern prepares for the narrative’s main contrast: even when the human ritual is duplicated, the deciding factor remains the word that comes from Yahweh.

Question 3

What does the move to “the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah” (v. 14) add to the meaning of the scene?

Accepted Answer

The location change adds both strategy and symbolism. Strategically, a high ridge functions as a lookout point from which Israel can be observed, matching Balak’s goal in verse 13. Symbolically, it shows Balak seeking a more advantageous religious-political stage: a prominent place suitable for sacrifices and for a public display before his officials. The text keeps the focus on the attempted control of circumstances—new place, same ritual—setting up the point that the decisive message does not come from geography but from Yahweh’s direct meeting with Balaam.

Question 4

Why does Balaam tell Balak to stand by the burnt offering while he goes to meet Yahweh (v. 15)?

Accepted Answer

The instruction divides roles in the scene. Balak remains at the visible center of the ritual—the burnt offering—along with his delegation, while Balaam leaves to seek the message. That separation highlights that the oracle is not produced by the public ceremony itself; it is obtained through Balaam’s encounter with Yahweh. It also keeps Balak positioned as the sponsor and witness of the sacrifices, while Balaam is positioned as the mouthpiece who must return with words he did not craft on his own.

Question 5

What does it mean in this passage that “Yahweh met Balaam” and “put a word in his mouth” (v. 16)?

Accepted Answer

In the passage’s own terms, it means the content of the next speech is provided by Yahweh and then delivered through Balaam. The wording emphasizes control over speech: Balaam is not free to improvise the oracle to match Balak’s request. Whatever the nature of the encounter (the text does not describe the mechanics), the narrative point is clear: the message originates with Yahweh and is placed into Balaam’s mouth. That is reinforced by the command to return to Balak and speak “thus,” meaning in the way Yahweh directs.

Question 6

How does verse 17 portray the public and political dimensions of the event?

Accepted Answer

Verse 17 shows Balak still standing by the burnt offering, with the princes of Moab present. That detail makes the moment more than a private religious consultation; it is a public act with national leadership looking on. Balak’s question, “What has Yahweh spoken?” indicates the stakes are tied to policy and security, not only personal curiosity. The princes’ presence also increases accountability: Balaam’s message will be heard in a context where Balak’s aims, resources (the sacrifices), and expectations are on display before his officials.
