Obadiah context
Exile & Return / 586 BC - 400 BC
Obadiah context is set in the exile and return, where Babylonian exile, return, rebuilding, and renewed covenant life under Persian rule.
Obadiah announces God’s judgment on Edom for proud self-confidence and for taking advantage of Jerusalem’s disaster. The prophecy widens to God’s near “day” when wrongdoing returns on every nation, ending with Zion’s rescue and God’s rule.
Edom's Pride and Deception: False security in mountain strongholds (vv. 1-4); Edom's Complete Destruction: No escape from divine judgment (vv. 5-9); Edom's Violence Against Jacob: Specific crimes during Jerusalem's devastation (vv. 10-14); The Day of the LORD: Divine justice for all nations (vv. 15-16); Israel's Final Restoration: Covenant promises fulfilled (vv. 17-21)
Read it as a tightly focused prophetic indictment: vivid images, sharp accusations, and a moral logic of reversal. Follow the movement from Edom’s crimes to a wider claim about God’s accountability for all peoples, then to the hope centered on Zion.
The prophecy addresses Edom in the wake of a severe attack on Jerusalem, when Edom stood by and joined in the harm. Edom and Israel were related through Esau and Jacob, so this was not only political hostility but a breach of kin duty. Longstanding conflict between the neighbors frames the intensity of the charge.
