The “house of Jacob” is then said to take possession of “their possessions,” implying a reversal where what belonged to them is secured again.

Literary Context
This unit concludes the book’s movement from announcing Edom’s coming humiliation (earlier in the oracle) to explaining why Edom is singled out for violence against Judah, and then to the wider horizon of “the day” when outcomes reverse. After describing Edom’s actions during Jerusalem’s disaster and warning that what Edom did will return on Edom, the final lines pivot to restoration language for Zion and a final statement of rule. The ending functions like a verdict and a new map: Israel’s losses are reversed, Edom’s future is cut off, and Zion becomes the center of governance.
Historical Context
Obadiah addresses hostility between related peoples, Israel/Judah and Edom (linked in tradition to Jacob and Esau), in the aftermath of a major blow to Jerusalem. Edom is portrayed as taking advantage of Judah’s vulnerability, including blocking escapes and benefiting from the plunder. The geography in vv. 19–20 uses known regions around Judah (Negev/South, Shephelah/lowlands, Ephraim, Samaria, Gilead, Philistine areas, and far-off exile locations like Zarephath and Sepharad), suggesting a period when Israelites and Judeans were displaced and land control had shifted under larger imperial pressure.
Theological Significance
Obadiah ends by reversing the earlier picture of Judah’s disaster and Edom’s advantage. The text explicitly says that , Zion will be treated as , and Jacob’s family will (v. 17). What “their possessions” means (v. 17). Some read it mainly as land restoration after displacement. Others think it is broader: land plus security, status, and everything Edom and others took during Jerusalem’s collapse.
How to take the “fire” image and “no survivors” (v. 18). Many take it as vivid war language for total defeat. Others think it predicts a historically complete end of Edom as a people. A further question is whether the wording is “total” in the strictest sense or “total” as prophetic emphasis.
Who the “deliverers/saviors” are (v. 21). Some take them as human leaders raised up for Jerusalem’s restored order (military and/or administrative). Others read them as judges or governors who enforce Yahweh’s decisions over Edom’s territory.
Where the named exile locations point (v. 20). The main uncertainty is “Sepharad.” Some locate it in Asia Minor; others associate it with regions nearer the east. The point is clear either way: Judeans are pictured as scattered widely and later resettling.
Why the disagreement exists The passage mixes poetic imagery (fire, stubble) with geographic and political detail (lists of regions and returnees). It also uses terms that can be read broadly (“possessions”) and includes at least one place name whose exact identification is uncertain (“Sepharad”). Those features create more than one reasonable way to describe the same basic outcome.
