Literary Context
Psalm 1 opens the Psalms as a doorway poem that contrasts two paths: the way of the blessed person and the way of the wicked. Verses 1–3 describe the blessed person as steady and productive, like a well-watered tree. Verse 4 begins the matching contrast section: it negates the prior picture (“not so”) and replaces it with a new image. The chaff comparison prepares for verses 5–6, which continue the contrast by describing how each “way” ends and what can or cannot endure.
