Keeping crookedness away, cutting ties with evil “A perverse heart will be far from me” extends the separation inward and relationally: he will not keep a twisted inner disposition near him, whether in himself or in those he keeps close. “I will have nothing to do with evil” restates the resolve broadly—no partnership, participation, or familiarity with what is wrong.
Literary Context
Psalm 101 reads like a leader’s self-pledge about how he intends to live and govern. The surrounding lines (vv. 1–2, 5–8) frame these vows with themes of integrity at home, just handling of others, and removing corrupt influences from the speaker’s presence. Verses 3–4 sit near the beginning of the pledge and focus on two related fronts: what the speaker allows into his sight and attention, and what he allows into his personal circle and character. The logic moves from refusing corrupt “objects” and “deeds” to refusing corrupt “hearts” and “paths.”
Historical Context
Many readers place this psalm in Israel’s monarchy setting, where a king or high official publicly stated ideals for court life and administration. In such a world, leadership was exercised through personal access, patronage, and the character of one’s household and advisors. What a ruler “set before his eyes” could include proposals, reports, entertainment, or examples presented by others, and what “clung” to him could refer to reputations and alliances that stuck through close association. The pledges in vv. 3–4 reflect a social environment where corruption spread through proximity and where private discipline shaped public outcomes.
Theological Significance
Psalm 101:3–4 presents a leader’s self-commitment to moral separation. Explicitly, the speaker refuses to “set” a vile matter in front of his eyes, rejects the “deeds” of faithless people, and insists those deeds will not “cling” to him. He also keeps “a perverse heart” far away and refuses involvement with evil. The passage links what a person takes in (sight/attention), what is practiced (deeds), what is cultivated inside (heart-disposition), and what is normalized through proximity (association).

Some readers take “I will set no vile thing before my eyes” mainly as refusing to look at corrupt or degrading sights. Others read it more broadly as refusing to place corrupt plans, proposals, or policies “before the eyes” (in view as an option to pursue), especially in a royal or administrative setting.
A second question is whether “a perverse heart will be far from me” speaks primarily about the speaker’s inner life, or primarily about the kind of people he keeps near him (trusted companions/advisers). Many conclude it intentionally covers both: the inner posture he rejects and the close company he refuses.
The phrases are short and can carry more than one everyday meaning. “Set before my eyes” can describe viewing, but also considering or approving. “Cling” can describe influence and imitation, but also public association that sticks to someone’s name. “Heart” can describe personal character, but in leadership contexts it also signals the character of those admitted to one’s presence.
