Public praise and public telling The speaker gives a chain of commands: thank Yahweh, call on his name, and make what he has done known “among the peoples” (Psalms 105:1). Praise is expressed by singing and by speaking—“tell of all his marvelous works” (Psalms 105:2). Worship here is both celebration directed to Yahweh and communication about Yahweh to others.
A rejoicing identity shaped by seeking The community is told to “glory” in Yahweh’s holy name and to let seekers’ hearts rejoice (Psalms 105:3). Historical Context
Psalm 105 reflects Israel’s worship life in which communal singing and recounting past events shaped identity across generations. The language assumes a people who know themselves as descended from Abraham and Jacob and who interpret their story through Yahweh’s actions and spoken decisions. The call to make Yahweh’s deeds known “among the peoples” fits a setting where Israel lived among other nations and where public testimony could be part of worship. While the psalm may have been used across different periods, it presents Israel as a community gathered to remember its past and live from it.
Theological Significance
Psalm 105:1–7 opens a longer song by piling up public acts of praise and public storytelling. The text explicitly calls the community to thank Yahweh, “call on his name,” sing, and speak about what he has done—especially his “marvelous works” (vv. 1–2). Praise is not only directed toward God; it also involves making his deeds known “among the peoples” (v. 1).

The second line widens the horizon: Yahweh’s judgments are “in all the earth,” portraying his decisions as extending beyond Israel’s borders. This closing supports the earlier call to speak of his deeds among the peoples.
The passage also ties worship to ongoing pursuit. It explicitly links rejoicing with “seeking Yahweh” (v. 3), and it repeats the call to seek Yahweh, his strength, and his “face” continually (v. 4). Memory is a major theme: the community is to remember God’s works, wonders, and “the judgments of his mouth” (v. 5).
Finally, the psalm identifies the audience as Abraham’s and Jacob’s descendants—Yahweh’s servant and chosen ones (v. 6)—and grounds everything in a confession: “He is Yahweh, our God,” whose judgments extend “in all the earth” (v. 7).
Two phrases can be taken in more than one reasonable way.
First, “call on his name” (v. 1) may be heard mainly as prayer (appealing to Yahweh), or mainly as proclamation (publicly invoking and honoring Yahweh’s name). The immediate context includes both God-directed worship (“give thanks… sing”) and people-directed witness (“make his deeds known among the peoples”), so some readers think the line intentionally carries both.
Second, “the judgments of his mouth” (v. 5) can be read as God’s condemnations and punishments, or more broadly as his spoken decisions—his declared rulings, promises, and covenant words that shape Israel’s story.
Why the disagreement exists These phrases are short, traditional worship language, and the surrounding lines move quickly between praising God, speaking to others, and recalling God’s past words and deeds. That creates overlap: “call” can be an appeal to God or an announcement about him; “judgments” can mean punishments in some settings, but also God’s authoritative pronouncements in others.
