Literary Context
Psalm 105 is a praise-filled retelling of Israel’s early story, selecting key moments to show God’s steady guidance and care. The psalm begins by calling the community to give thanks, sing, and remember God’s deeds (vv. 1–7). Verses 8–15 then set a foundation for everything that follows: God’s promise and God’s protection before Israel had strength or land. Later sections move through Joseph’s suffering and rise, the move into Egypt, and the exodus and settlement (vv. 16ff), presenting history as a chain of remembered divine actions.
Historical Context
The passage points back to Israel’s ancestral period, when the family line of Abraham lived as traveling herders without a settled territory in Canaan. They depended on access to wells, grazing land, and the tolerance of local rulers, making them socially and politically exposed. In that world, a “land grant” promise would be a major hope, but it remained unrealized for a long time. The psalm remembers those early generations as few in number, crossing boundaries between peoples and kingdoms, and yet somehow preserved from exploitation or royal aggression.
Theological Significance
The passage presents God as someone who does not lose track of commitments. The psalm says God “remembers” a across vast stretches of time (v.8) and traces that covenant through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Israel (vv.9–10). That continuity is the point: the same promise stays in view across generations.

Protective restraint placed on outsiders Despite their vulnerability, God is said to have prevented others from wronging them. The psalm goes further: God rebuked kings on their behalf. The quoted warning, “Don’t touch my anointed ones…my prophets,” presents the family as people under special protection, so that harming them is treated as crossing a boundary set by God.
The covenant’s stated content here is concrete: “I will give the land of Canaan” as an allotted inheritance (v.11). Alongside promise, the text highlights protection. The ancestors were “very few” and lived as outsiders in the land, moving from one people-group and kingdom to another (vv.12–13). Yet God restrained others from harming them and even “rebuked kings” for their sake (vv.14–15).
Two questions get debated.
First, how literal are the time-phrases (“forever,” “a thousand generations,” “everlasting covenant”)? Some read them as meaning an unending commitment with no real endpoint. Others read them as poetic language for God’s long-term faithfulness, without specifying exactly how later historical changes (like loss and regain of land) fit into that.
Second, who are “my anointed ones” and “my prophets” in v.15? Many take these titles as applying broadly to the patriarchs and their household as people under God’s special protection, even before later offices developed. Others think the psalm is using later worship language to describe earlier figures, so the titles are not claiming that the patriarchs held the same roles that later kings or prophets did.
Why the disagreement exists The passage is retelling older stories in poetic form. Poetry often uses compressed wording and titles that can sound technical (“anointed,” “prophets”) even when the scene described is earlier than the formal institutions those words might bring to mind. Also, “forever” language can function as emphasis on reliability rather than a timeline chart.
What this passage clearly contributes Explicitly, the text claims (1) God keeps the covenant in view across generations (vv.8–10), (2) the covenant includes a land promise focused on Canaan (v.11), (3) the ancestors were small and socially vulnerable as mobile outsiders (vv.12–13), and (4) God actively limited the harm others could do to them, including confronting rulers (vv.14–15).
