Rejecting the land and the sworn consequence The people “despised” the desirable land and refused to trust what God had said. Their distrust shows up as murmuring inside their tents and not listening to Yahweh’s voice. In response, God “swore” an outcome: they would be brought down in the wilderness. The consequence expands beyond that generation: their descendants would be overthrown among the nations and scattered through other lands.
