From disobedience to imitation They did not eliminate the peoples in the land the way Yahweh had directed. Instead, they blended in with the surrounding nations, and that proximity became learning: they picked up the nations’ ways of living and acting.
Idols as a trap What they learned included worship. They served the nations’ idols, and the psalm interprets this service as self-destructive: the idols became a “snare,” something that catches and holds them.
Violent worship and polluted land The psalm intensifies the charge: they offered their own sons and daughters as sacrifices, described as sacrifices to “demons.” This is also framed as shedding innocent blood—the blood of their children—offered to the idols of Canaan. Literary Context
Psalm 106 is a long retelling of Israel’s story that alternates between God’s repeated help and the people’s repeated unfaithfulness, using history to shape confession and plea. Earlier parts move from the exodus through wilderness failures, then into later rebellions. Verses 34–39 focus on life in Canaan after settlement, stressing a slide from incomplete obedience into social blending, then imitation, then worship practices, and finally violence. The language becomes increasingly graphic to underline how far the community’s actions drifted from their identity and calling within the story.

The passage reflects a remembered setting after Israel’s entry into Canaan, where neighboring peoples, local shrines, and established religious customs created constant pressure to adapt. “Not destroying the peoples” assumes an earlier command to remove or displace certain groups in the land, and the psalm views continued coexistence as the doorway to adopting local worship. References to “idols of Canaan” and child sacrifice align with Israel’s later memory of some Canaanite and wider Levantine rites, though the psalm reports these as practices Israel themselves carried out after cultural and religious blending.

2) What “demons” refers to (v.37). Others see “demons” mainly as a forceful way of saying the gods are not true gods and that the worship is corrupt and destructive; the point is less about mapping the unseen world and more about condemning the practice and its outcome.
3) What “polluted the land” means (v.38). Some interpret this primarily as ritual/moral defilement language: bloodshed makes the land unfit and brings covenant consequences. Others read it more broadly as social and ethical devastation: violence “pollutes” the community’s life, with the land as a vivid way to describe collective ruin.
Why the disagreement exists The passage is poetry that retells history with strong moral language.
