Literary Context
Psalm 113 begins a praise-focused unit (often grouped with Psalms 113–118) marked by the opening cry “Praise Yah,” and it functions like a doorway into the rest of the song. Verse 1 is an opening summons: it identifies who is being addressed (“servants of Yahweh”) and what they are to do (“praise”). It also narrows the focus of the praise to Yahweh’s “name,” setting up the psalm’s later movement from command to reasons for praise (developed in the verses that follow).
