Psalm 148 is a full-throated praise poem that summons creation to praise, not only individual worshipers. These opening verses begin in the sky realm and set a pattern of repeated imperatives (“Praise him…”) and expanding lists. The poem’s movement is orderly: it starts with the highest place (“heights”), then names inhabitants of that place (angels and host), then visible sky bodies (sun, moon, stars), and then the furthest reaches (“heavens of heavens” and waters above). Later parts of the psalm will continue the downward sweep toward earth, but vv. 1–4 establish the heavenly side of the call.
