Literary Context
Psalm 115 as a whole pushes back against the question “Where is their God?” by stressing that Israel’s God is active and free to act, unlike idols. Verses 4–7 sit inside a longer contrast section that begins by describing God’s supremacy and then turns to describe idols as powerless. The logic moves by vivid comparison: God acts; idols are made. The repeated “they have… but they don’t…” builds rhythm and drives home the difference between appearance and ability, preparing for the later warning about becoming like what one trusts.
Historical Context
The psalm reflects a world where many peoples used physical images in worship and expected them to represent a deity’s presence and power. Such images were often made from valuable metals and carefully shaped with recognizable human or animal features. Israelites lived among these practices through many periods, including times of foreign dominance and cultural pressure, when rival gods and their images were highly visible. This passage speaks into that setting by treating the idol as a crafted artifact and then highlighting, in everyday sensory terms, how it lacks the capacities people associate with a real, present, responsive power.
Theological Significance
Psalm 115:4–7 argues by contrast: the nations’ “idols” may look impressive and even be made from valuable materials (“silver and gold”), but they are human products (“the work of men’s hands”) and therefore powerless. The repeated pattern—“they have… but they don’t…”—presses one core point: idols possess the of life (mouth, eyes, ears, nose, hands, feet, throat) without any real perception, speech, or action.

The language is intentionally concrete. Instead of debating ideas in the abstract, the psalm points to ordinary sensory functions—speaking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling, walking—and denies each one to the idol.
Some readers take the body-part list mainly as mockery (a taunt meant to expose the absurdity of trusting a manufactured object). Others take it as a more straightforward statement about reality: an idol is literally a crafted artifact and so literally cannot perceive or act.
A smaller question is how to hear the final line: “Neither do they speak through their throat.” Many read it as repeating and intensifying the claim of total silence. Others think it may hint at the faint, unreliable sounds associated with idols or their rituals (linked to the verb sometimes glossed “mutter” in the psalm’s wording), but still with the same conclusion: no real voice answers.
The passage uses vivid poetry, and poetry can do more than one thing at once: it can state a fact (idols are made objects) while also ridiculing misplaced trust. Likewise, the throat/speech line can be read either as simple restatement for emphasis or as a more pointed image of empty sound.
Explicitly, the text claims that idols are expensive-looking, human-made objects and that their human-like features do not function: they do not speak, see, hear, smell, feel, or walk (vv. 4–7). Theological inference: the psalm sets up a sharp contrast between a God who can act freely (the larger psalm’s argument) and objects that cannot respond at all, making idols an unreliable place to seek presence, help, or guidance. The emphasis falls on the gap between appearance and ability (cf. Isaiah 44:9–20 for a longer satire on the same theme).
