Literary Context
Psalm 115 contrasts Israel’s God with the handmade gods of surrounding peoples. Just before v. 8, the psalm paints idols as objects with mouths, eyes, ears, noses, hands, and feet that do not actually function; they cannot speak, see, hear, smell, handle, walk, or make a sound (vv. 4–7). Verse 8 acts as a closing punchline to that portrait: because idols are inert, those who produce them and those who rely on them become inert in a matching way. The psalm then moves on to call Israel and related groups to trust the LORD instead (vv. 9–13).
