Literary Context
Psalm 123 belongs to the “Songs of Ascents” collection (Psalms 120–134), a cluster of short pilgrimage-like prayers and praises. Within the psalm itself, verse 1 functions as the opening move: it identifies the addressee (“you”) and frames the speaker’s posture (“I lift up my eyes”). The line about the one “who sits in the heavens” gives the reason this upward gaze makes sense: the one being approached is depicted as enthroned and elevated. The rest of Psalm 123 (vv. 2–4) will build on this opening by developing the posture of waiting and the need that drives the prayer.
