Literary Context
Within Psalm 123, the first half lifts the eyes to God in heaven and pictures servants watching a master’s hand for help. The closing lines (vv. 3–4) turn that upward look into a direct plea for mercy because the community has received “enough” contempt. Verse 4 completes the thought by specifying the kind of contempt and who is delivering it. The psalm’s movement is from attention to God, to request for mercy, to a vivid summary of the pressure prompting the request.
