Literary Context
Psalm 124 is a communal song of gratitude that looks back on a crisis and frames the outcome as a near-miss. Earlier lines (vv. 1–5) replay what could have happened if overwhelming enemies had prevailed, using images like being swallowed alive or swept away by floodwaters. Verse 6 shifts to praise, and verse 7 adds a second picture—capture and escape—to reinforce the same point: the people were in real danger, but the danger did not have the last word. Verse 8 (immediately following) broadens from the image to a direct statement about where help is found.
