Shared ground

Psalm 124:6 is a short public statement of gratitude: “Blessed be Yahweh.” The reason given is specific and negative: the worst outcome did not happen. The community was in real danger from hostile opponents, pictured as predators close enough to eat prey (“their teeth”). The verse treats survival as something owed to Yahweh’s decision not to let the attackers finish what they intended.

What is explicit in the line is (1) praise directed to Yahweh, and (2) a withheld defeat (“has not given us as prey”). The predator image is a poetic way of communicating how near and violent the threat was, whether or not it also recalls literal physical violence.

Where interpretation differs

Two questions can be heard in the wording “has not given us”:

• Did Yahweh merely allow or not allow events, or did he actively “hand over” outcomes? Some read the language as emphasizing God’s governing power over history: outcomes can be “handed over,” but here God refused. Others hear it as the community’s way of confessing dependence without claiming that God directly assigns every outcome; the point is that God protected rather than that God normally “hands people over.”

• How concrete is “prey to their teeth”? Some take it as a vivid metaphor for total defeat (being devoured), without specifying the exact form. Others think it likely points to literal violence in war or raids, using animal language to intensify the memory.

Why the disagreement exists The psalm uses compressed poetic speech. “Given us” can describe either active delivering into an enemy’s power or the choice not to permit that transfer of power. Likewise “teeth” can function as an image for destruction in general, but it can also fit situations of actual killing. The text itself does not name the event or the enemy, so readers infer the level of concreteness.

What this passage clearly contributes This verse contributes a basic claim about God and communal memory: the community interprets a near-disaster as genuinely near (predator-and-prey language) and interprets the avoided outcome as due to Yahweh’s restraint or intervention. It also models how Israel’s worship language links gratitude to a particular deliverance rather than to vague optimism. In the flow of Psalm 124, it is the pivot from imagining “what if Yahweh were not with us” (Psalm 124:1) to thanking Yahweh that the imagined end did not occur.
