Literary Context
Psalm 124 is a short communal song of rescue that looks back on a near-disaster and then turns to praise. Earlier lines imagine what would have happened “if Yahweh had not been on our side” (Psalm 124:1), describing enemies and overwhelming forces that could have swallowed the people. Verse 6 marks a shift from the “what if” scenario into thanksgiving: after rehearsing how close the danger was, the voice blesses Yahweh for not allowing the attackers to finish the kill. The animal-image sets up the following escape language later in the psalm.
