Literary Context
Psalm 126 is a short communal song of remembered reversal and renewed hope, often read as a “song of ascents” used by pilgrims traveling for worship (Psalm 126:1). Verse 2 sits in the memory portion: a “then” moment when the community’s fortunes changed so dramatically that their response was laughter and singing. The line then widens the frame to the watching world, where surrounding peoples supply an evaluative comment. The psalm’s logic links experienced change, emotional overflow, and public recognition of the cause.
