Literary Context
Psalm 138 is a first-person song of thanks that praises Yahweh for steadfast support and for his “name” and “word” (earlier in the psalm). The singer celebrates that God answered in trouble and strengthened the speaker inwardly, then looks outward to the wider world, envisioning rulers hearing and honoring Yahweh. Verse 6 fits as a general truth that supports the singer’s experience: God’s exalted status does not prevent him from noticing the lowly. It also prepares for the next lines about walking through trouble and being kept alive (see Psalm 138:7).
