Where interpretation differs

Some readers hear verse 10 mainly as a request (“Let…”), while others hear it as confident expectation (“They will…”), or as a prayer that blends both.

There is also disagreement about how concrete the images are: whether “nets” points to literal ambush tactics, or functions primarily as a metaphor for schemes and social traps.

A smaller question is what “together” contributes: falling at the same time, falling as a group, or simply “all of them.”

Why the disagreement exists

The Hebrew prayer style often uses wish-language that can sound like either petition or certainty, depending on context. Also, “nets” is ordinary hunting imagery, but Psalms frequently uses that imagery to describe non-physical danger (plots, accusations, betrayal). Finally, brief closing lines like this one can be intentionally compact, leaving the reader to supply details from the rest of the psalm.

What this passage clearly contributes

Textually, the verse pairs two outcomes: (1) the wicked are trapped by what belongs to them (“their own nets”), and (2) the speaker escapes (“I pass by”). Theologically (as inference from the line within the psalm), it supports the idea that God’s protection can look like safe passage through danger, and that wrongdoing is self-defeating in the end. It also closes the psalm on justice-and-deliverance together, rather than deliverance alone.
