The repeated word “all” (vv.17–18, 20) gives the claims a wide scope, but the text itself also sets clear qualifiers: God is “near” not merely to any words spoken, but to calling “in truth” (v.18); and his saving attention is linked to those who “fear him” (v.19) and “love him” (v.20).
One real difference is what “call on him in truth” means (v.18). Some read it mainly as sincerity and honesty—calling without pretending or manipulating. Others read it more as faithfulness and loyalty—calling in a way that matches covenant commitment, not merely intense emotion.
Another difference is how to understand “all the wicked he will destroy” (v.20). Some take “destroy” as a final, ultimate outcome (God’s last word on evil). Others take it as a general principle about how wickedness ends under God’s rule, without specifying the timing or the exact form of that end.
The wording is brief and poetic. “Truth” can mean honest speech and inward genuineness, but it can also mean reliability/faithfulness. Likewise “destroy” can be read as a strong statement of God’s settled opposition to evil, while leaving open whether the psalm is describing immediate events, long-term patterns, or a final judgment horizon.
These verses contribute clear claims about God’s consistency: his ways are right and his works are kind (v.17). They also clarify that God’s nearness is not random; it is connected to genuine calling (v.18). The text then portrays a three-part divine response—fulfilling desire, hearing cries, and saving (v.19)—before ending with a decisive contrast: preservation for those who love Yahweh and destruction for the wicked (v.20).
