Literary Context
Psalm 147 is a praise song that repeatedly gives reasons to praise by pointing to what Yahweh does in the world and for his people. It follows earlier lines about Yahweh restoring and supporting the vulnerable, and it fits with nearby themes in the psalm that highlight Yahweh’s active care in both public life and ordinary needs. Historical Context
The language of strengthened gates and life “within” the city fits a setting where city walls and controlled entrances mattered for safety, trade, and daily stability. Such lines resonate especially with periods when Jerusalem’s defenses and population were being rebuilt or re-secured after disruption, including the Persian-era restoration when the city and its boundaries were a major concern. “Peace in your borders” also reflects the desire for stable conditions in the surrounding territory so that agriculture and commerce can function. “Peace in your borders” can mean an absence of war at the boundaries, or a wider sense of stability and order in the surrounding territory (fewer threats, safer travel and trade, more predictable conditions for farming and commerce). Both readings fit the pairing with secure gates and abundant wheat.
Why the disagreement exists The wording is compact and poetic. The terms can refer to specific physical realities (gates, borders, wheat) while also pointing to the wider conditions those realities represent (security, stability, provision).
