God is not impressed by typical power symbols The verse states negatively what does not move God: he does not “delight” in the horse’s strength, and he takes no pleasure in a man’s legs. God values reverence and hopeful dependence The next verse turns positive: Yahweh does take pleasure in a certain kind of person. Two descriptions explain this posture. Literary Context
Psalm 147 is a praise psalm that celebrates Yahweh’s care for Jerusalem and his steady governance of creation and human life. The wider section (vv. 1–11) moves between God’s rebuilding and healing work among his people and his rule over the natural world, then draws out what kind of human response fits such a God. Verses 10–11 land as a focused contrast: God’s approval does not align with common measures of strength; it aligns with a posture that looks to him for help and acts with reverence.
Historical Context
The psalm’s themes fit well in a setting where the community knows vulnerability and rebuilding, such as the period after exile when Jerusalem’s life and institutions were being restored under Persian oversight. In that world, real security often seemed to depend on armies, cavalry, and trained fighters, and warhorses were a major symbol of power. Against that backdrop, the psalm insists that the community’s wellbeing is not anchored in the same power markers nations prized, but in a God-centered stance of reverence and patient dependence.
Theological Significance
Psalm 147:10–11 draws a sharp contrast between what people commonly admire and what Yahweh values. The text explicitly says God is not pleased by obvious, measurable strength (pictured as a warhorse’s power and a man’s strong legs).
