Guard me like what you guard most carefully The speaker asks God to “keep” him the way a person instinctively protects the center of the eye—something extremely sensitive and quickly defended. The point is not distance but nearness: protection that is constant, attentive, and immediate.
Hide me under the shadow of your wings A second image intensifies the first: he wants to be “hidden” where danger cannot reach. The “shadow of your wings” evokes warmth, cover, and being gathered close, as if a parent bird shields what is small and exposed.
