21:8Meaning
God’s power tracks down every enemy The verse presents God’s “hand” as able to locate and reach all the king’s enemies. It repeats the idea with “right hand” to intensify the certainty and completeness: none of the haters remain hidden or out of reach. The focus is not on the enemies’ strength but on God’s ability to find them.
Unit 2 (v. 9a): Enemies become like a blazing furnace at the moment God acts
The speaker says “you will make them as a fiery furnace” when God’s anger arrives. The point is not that the enemies literally become an oven, but that their situation becomes like being in extreme, inescapable heat—an image of severe, consuming defeat.
Unit 3 (v. 9b–c): Yahweh overwhelms and consumes
The verse then names Yahweh directly and piles up outcomes: he “swallow[s] them up,” and “fire” devours them. The combined images portray complete removal and destruction, emphasizing that the decisive actor is Yahweh, and that the enemies’ end is total rather than partial.
