Literary Context
Psalm 23 is a short poem that presents the LORD through the close-to-home image of a shepherd caring for one sheep. The psalm moves from provision and rest (green pastures and quiet waters) into restoration and direction (v.3), then into protection in danger (v.4), and finally into abundant welcome and ongoing security (vv.5–6). Verse 3 sits at the hinge: after describing refreshment, it explains the result—renewed life and guided movement. The logic is personal and experiential, spoken in the first person (“my”).
