Literary Context
Psalm 4 reads like a prayer spoken in the middle of conflict. The speaker begins by asking God to answer, then turns outward to address “sons of men” who are shaming him and chasing empty claims (vv. 1–2). Verse 3 functions as a hinge: it answers the question of why the speaker refuses despair—because Yahweh has made a distinction and will hear. After this, the psalm continues with warnings and counsel to the opponents about restraint and honest devotion (vv. 4–5), and it ends with trust and rest rather than panic (vv. 6–8).
