Literary Context
Psalm 49 is a wisdom-like poem addressed broadly to “all peoples,” pressing one main point: riches and status cannot stop death, and the wise should not fear the rich when they flourish. The earlier verses describe how people trust wealth, boast in it, and yet must leave it behind; death becomes the great leveler, and Sheol is pictured as the common destination. Verse 15 functions as a turning point in the argument, marking the psalmist’s personal confidence as a counterexample to the rich person’s end and preparing for the concluding warnings not to be impressed by outward glory.
