The passage is also explicit that God provides abundantly anyway: manna is described as coming from heaven, and meat arrives in overwhelming quantity (vv.23–29). Yet the giving of what they want becomes part of judgment: while they are still eating, some are struck down (vv.30–31). Where interpretation differs (only where needed)

Two places invite different readings without changing the main point.

First, “bread of angels” (v.25). Some take it as poetic praise for manna as “heavenly” food—food associated with God’s heavenly realm, not a statement that angels literally eat it. Others think it hints more directly at angelic food (or food delivered through heavenly beings), while still functioning as elevated poetry about God’s provision.

Second, the detail that God “killed some of the fattest” and “struck down the young men” (v.31). Some read this as selecting the strongest or leading offenders as representative targets in judgment. Others read it more generally as a description of widespread death that reached both the well-fed and the prime-of-life, stressing the severity and shock of the event.

Why the disagreement exists

Psalm 78 is poetry summarizing narrative traditions. It uses vivid images (“doors of heaven,” “bread of angels,” “birds like sand”) that can be read either as heightened metaphor or as compressed references to specific historical details. Also, the psalm retells events to make a moral point, so it sometimes emphasizes outcomes (“anger… killed”) without spelling out intermediate causes.

What this passage clearly contributes

Explicit claims: persistent rebellion (v.17), inward testing through craving-based demands (v.18), speech that questions God’s ability (vv.19–20), divine anger grounded in unbelief (vv.21–22), extraordinary provision of manna and meat (vv.23–29), and judgment arriving “while” they are still eating (vv.30–31). The cycle ends with continued unbelief and a life-pattern described as empty and fearful (vv.32–33).

Theological inference (grounded in the story): God’s generosity and God’s judgment are not opposites here; provision can expose and intensify rebellion when it is received without trust. The text also frames “trust” as the central issue behind the complaint: the same circumstances (desert need) become either dependence or defiance depending on whether God’s past works are treated as grounds for trust or as a platform for accusation.
