Rebellion, provocation, and forgetting These verses open with a lament: “How often” Israel rebelled in the wilderness and caused grief. The pattern is described as repeated—turning back, testing God, and provoking “the Holy One of Israel.” The core complaint is memory failure: they do not keep in mind God’s “hand,” meaning his active power, nor the day he rescued them from an enemy.
Signs in Egypt and escalating blows The psalm recalls God placing “signs” and “wonders” in Egypt, specifically in Zoan’s fields. A chain of afflictions follows: waters turned to blood; insects and frogs; crop loss to devouring pests; hail and frost destroying trees; hail and “hot thunderbolts” striking livestock. The language intensifies in v. 49–50: God directs fierce anger with “wrath” and “trouble,” including a “band of angels of evil,” and he does not spare from death but hands life over to pestilence. The climax is the death of Egypt’s firstborn, described as their chief strength, occurring “in the tents of Ham.”
Literary Context
Psalm 78 is a long teaching song that retells Israel’s story to shape present behavior. The psalm repeatedly moves between two themes: Israel’s stubbornness and God’s steady action in history. This unit sits in the middle of the retelling: it looks back to Israel’s wilderness conduct (rebellion, testing, forgetting) and then zooms in on the Egypt deliverance, describing the plagues in a compressed sequence. It then transitions to the journey out and the arrival, setting up later parts of the psalm that continue tracing Israel’s failures and God’s responses.
Historical Context
The passage assumes the shared memory of Israel’s foundational escape from Egypt, associated with Pharaoh’s rule, the Nile region, and the eastern delta area named Zoan. It reflects a world where large states used forced labor, and where divine power was often shown through control of nature, harvests, livestock health, and military outcomes. The “wilderness” frames a long transition between escape and settlement, and the arrival language assumes conflict and land reallocation, describing Israel’s later life as tribes living in assigned territories rather than as a traveling group.
Theological Significance
Psalm 78:40–55 retells Israel’s early story to explain a stubborn pattern: the people repeatedly resisted God in the wilderness and then “forgot” what God had done to rescue them (vv. 40–42). Against that backdrop, the psalm highlights God’s powerful acts in Egypt—public “signs” and “wonders” located in the fields of Zoan (vv. 43–51)—and then God’s careful leadership out of danger and into an inherited land (vv. 52–55).

Shepherd-like guidance, enemy defeat, and settlement The focus shifts sharply: God leads “his own people” like sheep, guiding them through the wilderness like a flock. He brings them out safely so they are not afraid, while the sea overwhelms their enemies. He then brings them to the border of his sanctuary, to “this mountain” taken by his right hand. Finally, he drives out nations before Israel, measures out an inheritance, and settles the tribes in their allotted dwellings.
Explicitly, the text portrays God as active in history and nature: water, insects, crops, trees, livestock, disease, and finally the firstborn of Egypt are all described as struck by God’s directed action (vv. 44–51). It also portrays God as a shepherd-like guide for “his own people,” bringing them safely out, overwhelming their enemies at the sea, and settling them by driving out nations and assigning land (vv. 52–55).
One main question is how to understand the line about “a band of angels of evil” (v. 49). Some read it as destructive angels sent by God as part of the plague judgment. Others read it as describing harmful messengers or agents of disaster more generally, emphasizing the result (calamity) rather than giving a detailed picture of angelic activity.
A second question is what “this mountain” and “the border of his sanctuary” refer to (v. 54). Some take it as the later temple mountain (Zion/Jerusalem). Others take it more broadly as the hill country/land area God claimed for Israel, with “sanctuary” pointing to God’s set-apart possession rather than a single future site.
The poem compresses events and uses elevated, image-rich language (“made a path for his anger,” “Holy One of Israel,” “mountain … taken by his right hand”). That style can describe real events while still leaving open how literally to picture the agents (“angels”) and how specifically to locate a place-name (“this mountain”) within Israel’s later geography.
The passage links Israel’s unbelief to a failure of memory: forgetting God’s “hand” and redemption from an enemy leads into renewed testing and provocation (vv. 40–42). It also frames the exodus plagues as purposeful, escalating signs of God’s power and judgment, climaxing in the death of the firstborn (vv. 43–51). Finally, it presents the same God who judges Egypt as the one who shepherds Israel, defeats pursuing enemies, and gives a settled inheritance by driving out nations and assigning land (vv. 52–55). Exodus 7–12 sits behind the plague sequence, but Psalm 78 uses the story to highlight remembrance, divine power, and the move from rescue to settlement.
