Literary Context
Psalm 82 reads like a public courtroom scene where God addresses other rulers or decision-makers and exposes their failure to protect the vulnerable. Verse 2 begins the direct rebuke that follows the opening setting (v.1), and it sets the tone for the rest of the psalm’s critique (vv.3–4) and warning (vv.5–7). The logic in v.2 is sharp and compressed: a pointed “How long?” question introduces ongoing wrongdoing, then names the two linked behaviors—unjust judging and biased favor—before the pause of Selah emphasizes the weight of the charge.
