Naming Yahweh as refuge and choosing trust
The voice shifts from describing “he” to “I,” turning the claim into a spoken commitment. The speaker says they will speak of Yahweh as “my refuge” and “my fortress,” using everyday safety images: shelter from exposure and a stronghold against attack. Calling him “my God” makes it relational and personal, and the unit ends with the speaker’s stance: “in whom I trust.”
Unit 3 (vv. 1–2 together): From general principle to personal confession
Taken together, the two verses move from a general statement about what closeness to God brings, to an individual’s direct declaration of reliance. The logic is: nearness leads to protection, and that protection is claimed by openly identifying Yahweh as one’s safe place and by entrusting oneself to him.
