Question 1

What does Revelation 1:1–2 say about where the message comes from and how it reaches John?

Accepted Answer

The passage presents a layered chain of communication. God gives the revelation to Jesus Christ (v.1). Jesus then sends it and it is made known through an angel to John (v.1). John’s role is not described as inventing the message, but as receiving and then “testifying” to it (v.2). Verse 2 links his testimony to “God’s word” and to “the testimony of Jesus Christ,” and it emphasizes that he reports what he saw. The structure highlights origin (God), mediation (Jesus and an angel), and witness (John).

Question 2

According to 1:1, who is the intended audience, and what is the stated purpose of the revelation?

Accepted Answer

The intended audience is described as God’s “servants” (v.1). The stated purpose is “to show” them “the things which must happen soon” (v.1). The wording suggests the message is meant for a wider group than John alone; John functions as a conduit to others. The purpose statement focuses on disclosure—making known what is coming—rather than entertainment or mystery for its own sake. At the same time, the later blessing (v.3) shows that the aim is not only awareness of future events but a response shaped by what is written.

Question 3

What does verse 2 emphasize about John’s responsibility and the kind of content that follows?

Accepted Answer

Verse 2 emphasizes John as a witness: he “testified” to what he received. It describes the content as “God’s word” and “the testimony of Jesus Christ,” and then adds that this testimony concerns “everything that he saw.” That last phrase signals that the book will include visual, visionary material presented as seen experience. It also portrays John as accountable to report the revelation comprehensively, not as someone who selects only what is easiest or most appealing. The emphasis supports the book’s claim to be a faithful report of revealed visions.

Question 4

How does verse 3 describe the way this prophecy is received in a community setting?

Accepted Answer

Verse 3 assumes a public setting: there is a person who “reads” and a group who “hear.” This fits a pattern where a text is read aloud to an assembled audience rather than privately read by each individual. The blessing is not limited to the reader; it includes the hearers as well. The verse then adds a third element: they are to “keep the things that are written in it.” So reception is portrayed as a shared act—public reading, communal hearing, and an ongoing response to what is written.

Question 5

What three actions are connected to the blessing in 1:3, and how are they related?

Accepted Answer

Three actions are connected to the blessing: reading aloud, hearing, and keeping what is written (v.3). The grammar links them as a package: the reader and the hearers are both included, and “keeping” describes what should follow from hearing. The verse treats the prophecy as something that moves from proclamation (reading) to reception (hearing) to an ongoing stance or practice (keeping). Even without detailing everything “keeping” involves, the passage connects blessing to engagement with the message that goes beyond curiosity or one-time exposure.

Question 6

What does the passage itself give as the reason for urgency, and what questions does that raise for interpretation?

Accepted Answer

The passage gives a simple reason for urgency: “the time is at hand” (v.3), paired with “must happen soon” (v.1). Explicitly, it signals nearness and presses the importance of responding to the message. Interpretively, it raises questions about what “soon” and “at hand” mean: whether the events were expected to begin in John’s near future, whether it means the events will unfold quickly once they start, or whether it primarily communicates certainty and immediacy from God’s perspective. The text establishes urgency; it does not fully define the timeline.
