1:4Meaning
Addressees and the threefold source of blessing John names himself and writes to “the seven assemblies … in Asia,” then speaks a blessing of “grace” and “peace” over them. He presents this blessing as coming from God described as the one who exists now, existed before, and is coming, and also from “the seven Spirits” pictured as standing before God’s throne.
Unit 2 (v. 5a): Jesus’ identity in three titles
John adds a third source for the blessing: Jesus Christ. Jesus is described as a reliable witness, as “firstborn of the dead” (suggesting precedence connected to resurrection), and as the ruler over earthly kings.
Unit 3 (vv. 5b–6a): Jesus’ actions for “us”
The focus shifts from titles to what Jesus has done for his people: he loves “us,” and he has washed or freed “us” from “our sins” by means of his blood. John then says Jesus made “us” into a kingdom and also made “us” priests serving Jesus’ God and Father.
Unit 4 (v. 6b): Praise response
Because of who Jesus is and what he has done, John directs praise to him: “to him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever,” ending with “Amen,” signaling agreement and closure to the praise.
