The attention signal (“Behold”) functions like a headline: what follows should be read as a new stage with heightened seriousness. The key theological point here is not the details of the prior plague, but the claim that the judgments in the vision are ordered and escalating, not random.

Where interpretation differs

Two questions get debated.

First, what exactly is included in “the first woe.” Many readers treat the whole fifth trumpet scene (9:1–11) as the woe. Others wonder whether the woe’s boundary should include adjoining material, because Revelation sometimes blends scenes and echoes earlier announcements.

Second, what “coming after this” emphasizes. Some read it mainly as a timetable cue (“soon”). Others read it mainly as a sequencing cue (“next in the vision”), without making claims about how quickly it happens in calendar time.

Why the disagreement exists

The verse is very brief and functions like a label rather than a full explanation. It assumes the reader will connect it back to earlier warnings about “woes” and forward to what follows, but it does not restate those connections. Also, words like “coming” can carry both “future” and “near” senses depending on context.

What this passage clearly contributes

Explicit in the text: the first woe has ended; two woes remain; they come “after this”; the vision has a numbered sequence of woes; “Behold” highlights what follows.

Reasonable inference: the trumpet judgments are staged and intensifying, and the reader should expect the narrative pressure to rise as the next sections unfold (especially the sixth trumpet in Revelation 9:13).
