Literary Context
This line comes at the end of the fifth trumpet scene (9:1–11), where a terrifying plague is described and then summarized. Now the voice of the text steps back to label that entire episode as the first of three “woes” announced earlier. The verse bridges from the fifth trumpet to what follows, preparing readers for the sixth trumpet and beyond. It also reinforces that the visions are ordered and staged, not random, and it invites the audience to read the next section as part of an escalating set.
