Verse by Verse
Naomi’s farewell and blessing Naomi tells both women to go back, each to her “mother’s house,” sending them toward their own family support. She asks Yahweh to show them kindness in return for the kindness they showed “the dead” (their husbands) and Naomi herself. She also asks Yahweh to give each of them “rest” in the house of a new husband. The goodbye is emotional: she kisses them, and all three weep.
The daughters-in-law refuse Ruth and Orpah respond with a firm “No,” saying they will return with Naomi to Naomi’s people. Their answer frames the issue as belonging and identity: they are willing to attach themselves to Naomi’s community, not only to Naomi personally.
Naomi’s practical argument Naomi repeats her command to turn back and calls them “my daughters,” stressing affection even while urging separation. She asks why they would come with her, then points to the key obstacle: she has no sons who could become their husbands. She presses it further: she is too old to marry, and even if she could marry immediately and have sons, that would not solve their present need.
Literary Context
This scene follows the opening tragedy: Naomi’s family leaves Bethlehem for Moab because of famine, and Naomi loses her husband and two sons (1:1–5). After hearing that conditions in Judah have improved, Naomi starts the journey back, with Ruth and Orpah accompanying her (1:6–7). Verses 8–13 form the first and longest push from Naomi for them to separate. It sets up the coming contrast: one daughter-in-law will accept Naomi’s reasoning and return, while the other will resist and stay, driving the story’s next major turn (1:14–18).
Historical Context
The story is set “in the days when the judges ruled,” a period when Israel was organized by tribes rather than a central monarchy. Travel between Moab and Judah was possible, and marriages between Israelites and Moabites occur in the narrative without explanation, suggesting regular contact despite social boundaries. Widows without adult sons were economically vulnerable; connection to a husband’s household was a main path to stability. Naomi’s repeated focus on “house,” “husband,” and future children reflects the basic social reality that remarriage and family networks were key protections for women in this setting.
Theological Significance
Naomi’s words combine care and realism. She urges Ruth and Orpah to return to their own families (“mother’s house”), and she speaks a blessing over them, asking Yahweh to repay the kindness they have shown both to their deceased husbands (“the dead”) and to Naomi (vv. 8–9). The “rest” she wants for them is tied directly to finding security in a new husband’s household (v. 9). The scene is emotionally costly: she kisses them and all three weep (v. 9).

Naomi’s emotional conclusion and interpretation Naomi turns her argument into pointed questions: would they really wait for hypothetical sons to grow up, and would they refuse other husbands in the meantime? She answers for them: no. She says her pain is especially great “for your sakes,” because she believes Yahweh’s hand has gone out against her, making her situation a losing prospect for anyone who stays tied to her.
Ruth and Orpah’s first response is not just affection for Naomi but willingness to attach themselves to Naomi’s people (v. 10). Naomi answers with a practical argument: she has no sons to offer them as husbands, and she has no plausible path to producing sons in time to meet their needs (vv. 11–13). She also interprets her suffering as Yahweh’s hand being “against” her (v. 13).
Some readers think Naomi’s “sons as husbands” language points to a specific family-duty expectation (a close male relative providing an heir and protection through marriage). Others think Naomi is speaking more generally: she has no male household resources left, so following her is a dead end economically and socially.
Naomi’s statement that Yahweh’s hand has gone out against her (v. 13) is also read in more than one way. Some treat it mainly as Naomi’s accurate theological interpretation of her circumstances. Others treat it as Naomi’s wounded perception—real grief and belief, but not necessarily the story’s final word on what Yahweh is doing.
The passage uses short, loaded family terms (“mother’s house,” “rest,” “sons for husbands”) that can be read either as references to particular social customs or as ordinary speech about security and family support. Also, the story reports Naomi’s interpretation of events without immediately correcting or confirming it, leaving room to ask how fully the narrator endorses her conclusion.
This scene shows that faith-language and practical decision-making are intertwined: Naomi prays for Yahweh’s kindness (vv. 8–9) while urging choices aimed at stability (vv. 11–13). It also sets up one of Ruth’s main themes: covenant loyalty can be costly, and it involves questions of belonging—whether Ruth and Orpah will define their future by their birth families or by attachment to Naomi and her people (v. 10). Finally, it introduces a tension that will drive the story forward: Naomi believes Yahweh is opposing her (v. 13), yet she still speaks of Yahweh as the one who gives kindness and security (vv. 8–9).
