Question 1

What does Naomi ask Ruth and Orpah to do, and where does she tell them to go?

Accepted Answer

Naomi directly tells both women to stop traveling with her and to go back (vv. 8, 11–12). The destination she names is “each of you to her mother’s house” (v. 8). In context, that is more specific than simply “go home”: it points them toward their own family network as the place where support, protection, and future plans (including remarriage) would be most likely. The repeated “turn back” language emphasizes a decisive separation rather than a temporary pause in the journey.

Question 2

What reasons does Naomi give for urging them to return, and which of those reasons are emotional versus practical?

Accepted Answer

Naomi gives layered reasons. Practically, she says she has no sons who could become their husbands (v. 11). She expands that point by arguing she is too old to marry, and even a best‑case scenario—marriage that very night and immediate sons—would still leave Ruth and Orpah waiting many years (vv. 12–13). Emotionally, she frames her insistence as grief “for your sakes” and as part of her larger hardship (v. 13). Her argument mixes compassion with a hard assessment of their prospects if they stay with her.

Question 3

What does Naomi’s blessing in verses 8–9 reveal about how she views Ruth and Orpah’s past actions?

Accepted Answer

Naomi interprets Ruth and Orpah as having shown real loyalty and care. She asks Yahweh to “deal kindly” with them because they dealt kindly “with the dead, and with me” (v. 8). That implies their devotion was not only toward their husbands while the husbands were alive, but also toward their husbands’ memory and obligations after death, as well as toward Naomi in her vulnerability. The blessing also treats Yahweh as the one able to repay kindness and provide a secure future (vv. 8–9).

Question 4

In verse 10, what do Ruth and Orpah’s words suggest about what they are choosing—and not choosing?

Accepted Answer

They refuse Naomi’s first push to separate and say they will return “with you to your people” (v. 10). That statement goes beyond accompanying Naomi as a person; it frames their choice as joining Naomi’s community. At least at this moment, they are not treating the relationship as a temporary travel arrangement until a safe point. They also are not expressing a plan focused on their own remarriage prospects in Moab. Instead, the key stated commitment is shared identity and belonging with Naomi and her people.

Question 5

What is meant by “rest” in verse 9, and how is it connected to the phrase “in the house of her husband”?

Accepted Answer

In Naomi’s prayer, “rest” is something Yahweh grants, and it is defined immediately by where it is found: “each of you in the house of her husband” (v. 9). So the passage ties “rest” to the security and stability associated with a husband’s household in that world—provision, protection, and a settled place. It can include emotional peace, but the text anchors it in social and economic stability through remarriage. Naomi’s hope for them is not a vague calmness; it is a concrete, household-based future.

Question 6

How does Naomi’s “sons for husbands” argument function within the logic of verses 11–13?

Accepted Answer

Naomi’s logic is: if Ruth and Orpah come with her, they are implicitly hoping for a future Naomi cannot supply (v. 11). She states she has no sons available, then pushes the idea to its extreme: even if she could marry immediately and bear sons, the women would face an unrealistic wait until those sons were grown (vv. 12–13). Her rhetorical questions highlight how unreasonable it would be for them to delay their lives on a hypothetical solution. The argument’s function is to remove any rational basis for continuing with her, not merely to express sadness.

Question 7

What claim does Naomi make about Yahweh in verse 13, and how does it relate to what she said earlier in verses 8–9?

Accepted Answer

Naomi claims “the hand of Yahweh is gone forth against me” (v. 13), meaning she interprets her suffering as opposition from Yahweh, not mere bad luck. That claim sits in tension with her earlier speech where she asks Yahweh to repay kindness and grant “rest” through marriage security (vv. 8–9). Together, the lines show Naomi speaking about Yahweh in two ways at once: as the one who can give good gifts to Ruth and Orpah, and as the one she believes has brought painful hardship upon her. The text presents this tension without resolving it in these verses.
