Question 1

What does the repeated “Behold, you are beautiful” in verse 1 do for the tone and pacing of the poem?

Accepted Answer

The doubled “Behold” and repeated “you are beautiful” creates an excited, insistent tone. It signals that what follows is not reluctant or formal praise but overwhelmed admiration. It also slows the moment down: before describing individual features, the speaker states the conclusion—she is beautiful—and then invites attention to details. The repetition frames the rest of the lines as evidence or illustration of that opening claim, not as a checklist. It keeps the focus on delight and notice, matching the poetic style described in Stage A’s summary (additive images rather than argument).

Question 2

In verse 1, how do the “doves” and “veil” images work together to describe her eyes?

Accepted Answer

The text explicitly pairs “Your eyes are doves” with “behind your veil.” Taken together, the image suggests a gaze that is attractive and gentle, glimpsed through partial covering. The veil adds a sense of partial concealment and invitation: the eyes are visible enough to be noticed, but not fully exposed, which can intensify the tenderness of the moment. The dove comparison likely emphasizes a pleasing quality (often read as softness or calmness), though the text itself does not spell out exactly which feature (shape, color, gentleness) is intended. Stage A flags that as a real ambiguity.

Question 3

What aspects of beauty are highlighted by comparing her hair to “a flock of goats” descending Mount Gilead (v. 1)?

Accepted Answer

The comparison is visual and kinetic: a flock descending a hillside suggests movement, thickness, and a flowing cascade. Goats in a group create a dark, rippling effect as they move, so the image can communicate long, abundant hair with a lively, natural sheen. The mention of Mount Gilead anchors the metaphor in recognizable geography and pastoral life, making the praise concrete rather than abstract. The point is not that hair resembles goats in every respect, but that the speaker sees an impressive, attractive “flow” and fullness, as Stage A notes.

Question 4

How does the teeth-and-sheep comparison in verse 2 emphasize order and completeness?

Accepted Answer

Verse 2 piles up details: “newly shorn,” “come up from the washing,” “every one of them has twins,” and “none is bereaved among them.” Together these stress clean brightness (washed, newly shorn) and symmetry (paired like twins). The final line—none is “bereaved”—pushes the image toward completeness: no gaps, no missing match. The poem treats this as a beauty feature, praising health and harmony rather than luxury. In Stage A’s terms, the focus is on clean, orderly appearance and the satisfaction of seeing everything “match.”

Question 5

In verse 3, what does the poem communicate by moving from lips (scarlet thread) to mouth (lovely) to temples (pomegranate) “behind your veil”?

Accepted Answer

The sequence moves from a vivid color image (scarlet thread) to a broad evaluation (“your mouth is lovely”) and then to another partially hidden feature (temples behind the veil). The scarlet thread suggests fine shape and striking redness. Calling the mouth “lovely” may include the look of her smile and possibly the pleasantness of her speech, though the text stays general. The pomegranate image suggests warm, healthy color and delicate beauty seen through partial covering. The repeated “behind your veil” keeps the scene modest and suggestive: beauty is perceived without full exposure.

Question 6

What is conveyed by comparing her neck to “David’s tower” with many shields (v. 4)?

Accepted Answer

The tower image highlights height, strength, and impressive presence. A tower “built for an armory” and hung with many shields adds the idea of splendor and display: not only strong, but adorned and attention-catching. The shields may also imply dignity and honor associated with “mighty men,” lending a royal or heroic atmosphere to the compliment. Stage A notes uncertainty about whether an actual historical structure is meant; either way, the metaphor functions the same in the poem—her posture and bearing are stately, striking, and memorable.

Question 7

How does the image of “two fawns… twins… feeding among the lilies” (v. 5) shape the portrayal of intimacy?

Accepted Answer

The verse explicitly praises “two breasts” and chooses an image that is gentle rather than crude: twin fawns convey softness, youthfulness, and symmetry. “Feeding among the lilies” adds a setting of beauty and fragrance, keeping the erotic focus within a delicate, poetic frame. Readers differ on whether the lilies are simply scenery or hint at a sensual context, but either way the language avoids explicit description and instead uses natural imagery to communicate tenderness. Stage A treats this as an intimate compliment that still emphasizes paired harmony and gentle attractiveness.
