Knowledge and Understanding in the Bible
Proverbs treats knowledge as teachability and true understanding rooted in the fear of the LORD. It is more than information: it includes moral insight, awareness of consequences, and the ability to choose what is fitting. The wise seek knowledge; the foolish reject it.
In context
This theme appears in passages such as Proverbs, where the Bible develops it through story, instruction, warning, and promise. Proverbs 1:7 states a foundational contrast: real knowledge starts with “fear of Yahweh,” while fools respond to wisdom and instruction with contempt. In Proverbs 2:5–8 the speaker promises that a serious pursuit of wisdom leads to a deep grasp of reverent awe toward Yahweh and to real knowledge of God. The reason is that wisdom is not finally self-made: Yahweh is its giver, and what he “speaks” is knowledge and understanding.
