Fear spreads and leadership collapses Ashkelon “sees” what has happened and becomes afraid, and Gaza is pictured as writhing in pain. Ekron also fears because its “expectation” is shamed—what it counted on fails. The verse culminates with political and social reversal: Gaza’s king perishes, and Ashkelon ends up uninhabited.

Literary Context
This unit sits inside an oracle of judgment moving down the Mediterranean coast and inland, naming cities and describing their downfall in sequence. The lines before it focus on northern coastal powers and their defenses, setting up why southern neighbors would panic when they “see it.” Here the focus tightens on Philistia, presenting a chain reaction: news or sight leads to fear, fear exposes false confidence, and collapse follows. The last verse shifts from destruction to transformation, hinting that the same power that cuts down pride can also leave survivors and reorder their identity.
Historical Context
Zechariah speaks to a small post-exile Judean community living under Persian rule, surrounded by older city-states and regional rivals. Philistine centers like Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, and Ekron were strategic ports and trade hubs on the coastal route linking Egypt and the Levant; their political stability mattered for commerce and security. In the wider eastern Mediterranean, empires and armies regularly reshaped local leadership, sometimes removing kings and repopulating cities. Against that background, the oracle portrays coastal Philistia as vulnerable to the same kind of upheaval that had repeatedly swept the region.

The text then describes political and social collapse—Gaza’s king is removed, Ashkelon is left empty, and Ashdod’s normal civic order is disrupted by an “outsider” figure settling there.
The speaker (“I”) frames the upheaval as purposeful: Philistine “pride” is cut off. Yet the passage does not end with only destruction. It moves to removal of “blood” and “abominations” (images of defiling violence or forbidden practices), and then to a surprising claim: survivors are brought into relationship with Israel’s God and described with language of belonging (like a leader in Judah; Ekron like a Jebusite).
What the cities “see.” Some read “it” as the earlier judgment on a nearby power (especially Tyre) that triggers panic down the coast. Others take it as the Philistine cities directly seeing the same invading force arriving for them.
Who “a bastard” is in Ashdod. Some understand this as a mixed or socially disqualified population settling there after conquest and repopulation. Others read it more narrowly as an illegitimate or foreign ruler who replaces the old leadership.
What “blood…in his mouth” and “abominations…between his teeth” describe. Some take it as imagery of violent predation (bloodshed) being stopped. Others connect it to forbidden eating or idolatrous food practices; either way, the picture is of defilement being removed.

Why the disagreement exists The Hebrew uses brief pronouns (“it,” “he”) and compressed images, and the passage shifts quickly from city-by-city judgments (vv.5–6) to cleansing and incorporation (v.7). That leaves multiple plausible links between the lines without changing the overall direction of the message.
What this passage clearly contributes This text holds together two themes: (1) the collapse of false security and civic pride in Philistia (fear, lost king, empty city), and (2) the possibility of a surviving group being purified from defiling practices and folded into Judah’s life under Israel’s God. The “Jebusite” comparison underlines the surprising nature of that inclusion by pointing to a former outsider group later associated with Jerusalem’s story.
