Question 1

What effect does the list of four city names in verse 4 have on the way the judgment is heard?

Accepted Answer

Naming Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, and Ekron makes the oracle feel comprehensive across the Philistine urban network, not like one isolated defeat. Each city is paired with a strong outcome—forsaken, desolation, driven out, rooted up—so the reader hears a multi-city collapse. The variety of verbs also suggests more than one kind of disruption: abandonment, ruin, expulsion, and permanent removal. Even without extra historical detail, the list signals that the coastline’s key centers are being emptied, which prepares for the later description of the whole coast changing into pastureland (vv. 6–7).

Question 2

In verse 5, what groups or places are addressed, and how do the labels build the scope of the oracle?

Accepted Answer

Verse 5 moves from geography to people and then back to a broader regional label. It addresses “the inhabitants of the sea coast,” then calls them “the nation of the Cherethites,” and then speaks to “Canaan, the land of the Philistines.” The stacking of terms widens and intensifies the target: not only certain cities (v. 4) but the whole coastal population and their territory. The key claim is explicit: “the word of Yahweh is against you,” and the announced result is depopulation—“no inhabitant.” The labels make the oracle feel total rather than partial.

Question 3

What does “they will drive out Ashdod at noonday” contribute to the picture in verse 4?

Accepted Answer

The phrase “at noonday” stands out because expulsions are often imagined as happening under cover of darkness or during extended siege. Here, the timing language can underline how exposed and decisive the event is: it happens openly, when people are awake and daily life is underway. It may also suggest suddenness—displacement not as a slow drift but as an abrupt forcing out. Whatever the nuance, the verse’s main point is clear: Ashdod will not remain stable or secure; it will experience removal that matches the wider pattern of emptying and uprooting across the named cities (v. 4).

Question 4

How do verses 6–7 reframe the coastal land after the judgment, and what images are used?

Accepted Answer

Verses 6–7 shift from city collapse to land transformation. Instead of rebuilt towns, the coast becomes “pastures,” with simple shelters for shepherds and enclosures for flocks. That imagery suggests reduced population density and a basic rural economy replacing fortified urban centers. Verse 7 then reframes the land politically and socially: it “will be for the remnant of the house of Judah,” who will graze there and “lie down in the evening” in “the houses of Ashkelon.” The point is not just new land use but a new, safer situation for Judah’s surviving community.

Question 5

What is the relationship between judgment on the Philistine coast and hope for Judah’s remnant in this passage?

Accepted Answer

The passage ties the two together as a single reversal. The Philistine coast loses its inhabitants and city life (vv. 4–5), and the emptied land becomes pasture (v. 6). That same space then becomes an inheritance and place of rest for Judah’s remnant (v. 7). The text gives a reason for Judah’s change in circumstances: “Yahweh, their God, will visit them, and restore them.” Explicitly, Yahweh’s action stands behind both sides—his word is against the coast’s inhabitants (v. 5), and his visit restores Judah (v. 7).

Question 6

What does the passage explicitly say Yahweh does, and what does it imply about his authority?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, Yahweh’s “word” is said to be against the Philistine land (v. 5), and Yahweh himself says, “I will destroy you,” resulting in no inhabitants (v. 5). Later, Yahweh “will visit” Judah and “restore” them (v. 7). The passage therefore presents Yahweh as directing outcomes for multiple peoples and territories, not only Judah. The implied theological point is about scope: Yahweh’s authority reaches across the coastlands and their cities, and he can both remove populations and assign land to a surviving community. The text expresses this as divine initiative rather than mere chance events.

Question 7

How does the word “remnant” function in verse 7 within the flow of the oracle?

Accepted Answer

“Remnant of the house of Judah” signals that Judah’s future is described in terms of survival after crisis, not uninterrupted strength. Within the flow, it also clarifies who benefits from the coast’s transformation: not the whole nation in triumphal terms, but those left after upheaval. That fits the passage’s overall movement from emptying and desolation (vv. 4–5) to a quieter picture of grazing and resting (vv. 6–7). The remnant language keeps the hope realistic within the book’s wider theme of sweeping judgment while still affirming a continuing community that receives land and security as Yahweh restores their situation (v. 7).
