2:8Meaning
Yahweh hears their contempt and border arrogance Yahweh states that he has heard Moab’s “reproach” and Ammon’s insults. The words are aimed at “my people,” and the offense includes acting bigger than they are—treating Judah’s border as something they can push around or claim against.
Unit 2 (v. 9a): A sworn verdict and a total reversal of their land
Because of what Yahweh has heard, he swears by his own life as “Yahweh of Hosts, the God of Israel.” The sentence is severe: Moab will become like Sodom and Ammon like Gomorrah—famous examples of devastated places. The imagery that follows (“nettles,” “salt pits,” “perpetual desolation”) paints land that is ruined, unproductive, and enduringly abandoned.
Unit 3 (v. 9b): Judah’s remnant ends up possessing what mocked them
The announced outcome is not only devastation but transfer. “The remnant of my people” will plunder them, and the “survivors of my nation” will inherit them. The ones who were targeted and belittled are pictured as the ones who remain and then take possession.
