Joab sends a messenger to David with a complete report of the fighting and instructions for how to deliver it.
vv. 20–21
Joab anticipates David’s anger if the king hears they approached too near the city wall, and he scripts the likely royal criticism by invoking an earlier cautionary story.
v. 21b–22
Joab tells the messenger to close with the specific notice that Uriah the Hittite has died; the messenger departs to deliver the message.
vv. 23–24
The messenger describes the action moving from open field back toward the gate, then casualties caused by shooters from the wall; several of David’s servants die, including Uriah.
v. 25
David sends a return message to Joab, urging him not to be discouraged by the losses and to intensify the assault until the city falls.
