Unit 1 (v. 8a): The king returns and walks into the banquet room
The king comes back from the palace garden into the place where the wine banquet is happening. The scene is framed as a sudden re-entry into an ongoing situation, not a private conversation.
Unit 2 (v. 8b): Haman is found on Esther’s couch
Haman is described as having fallen on the couch where Esther is. Whether he collapsed in panic or leaned toward her to plead, the visible result is the same: he is on her couch, in her space, at the worst possible time.
Unit 3 (v. 8c–d): The king interprets the sight as an attempted violation
The king speaks out loud: “Will he even force the queen before me in the house?” His words treat the sight as more than begging; it looks like an attack, and it is happening openly and inside the royal residence.
Unit 4 (v. 8e): Immediate court action signals Haman’s downfall
As soon as the king’s words go out, attendants cover Haman’s face. The action functions like a public marker that he is under judgment and no longer able to defend himself as a free man.
