Verses 28–35 function as a concentrated sentencing speech: the Lord states what will happen, names why it will happen, and then repeats the decision using the vivid “cup” picture. The cup image seals the point by making the coming humiliation and devastation feel unavoidable and total.
Historical Context
Ezekiel speaks in the setting of Judah’s collapse under the Neo-Babylonian Empire, after earlier deportations but before Jerusalem’s final destruction. Judah’s leaders had sought security through shifting alliances and dependence on surrounding powers, including those that later became enemies. The passage reflects a world where imperial states could seize labor’s fruit, enslave, and publicly shame defeated populations.
