Historical Context
Ezekiel spoke as Babylon dominated the region and Judah was being emptied through conquest and exile. Ammon lay east of the Jordan and had long, tense relations with Israel and Judah; when Judah weakened, neighboring groups could seize advantage or celebrate a rival’s collapse. The “children of the east” points to peoples from the desert and steppe regions to the east, often portrayed as mobile groups who camp, herd, and use animals suited for open country. The oracle imagines Ammon’s towns and fields being taken over and repurposed for that way of life.

Second, what is Rabbah’s role? Some take Rabbah as the literal chief city being singled out for special humiliation. Others think Rabbah also functions as a stand-in for Ammon as a whole, since the next line immediately widens to “the children of Ammon.”
The phrase “children/sons of the east” is a flexible ancient label, and the passage itself does not name a particular tribe or empire. Also, the imagery (milk, fruit, camels, flocks) can fit either a concrete historical takeover by specific groups or a more general picture of the land being repurposed away from city life.
Explicitly, the text links gloating over another people’s devastation—especially when it involves God’s sanctuary and God’s people—with divine judgment on the mocker. It also depicts judgment not only as destruction but as dispossession: outsiders move in, consume the produce, and the leading city becomes animal space rather than secure urban life. Finally, it reinforces Ezekiel’s theme that historical upheaval is presented as a way nations come to recognize Yahweh’s rule (cf. Ezekiel 25:5).
