Plunder and dismantling into the sea The attackers take Tyre’s “riches” and “merchandise” as spoil. They then break down the city’s walls and destroy its desirable houses. The picture goes beyond ordinary looting: stones, timber, and even dust are thrown “in the midst of the waters,” portraying the city’s structures being dismantled and removed.
The end of public sound and celebration God speaks directly: he will make the “noise” of songs stop, and the sound of harps will no longer be heard. The point is not merely that people are sad, but that normal civic life and entertainment end; the city loses its audible identity.

These verses sit inside Ezekiel’s long oracle against Tyre (Ezekiel 26), a carefully escalating announcement of collapse. Earlier lines describe attackers coming like waves and the assault of a king from the north; the language then broadens to repeated blows and the city’s reduction to rubble. Verses 12–14 function as a climax: plunder, demolition, and the removal of the city’s “sound” and “shape.” The section ends with a firm closing statement that the speaker is Yahweh and the outcome is settled, concluding this movement of the oracle.
Historical Context
Tyre was a major Phoenician port city whose strength came from seaborne trade, wealth, and strong defenses, including its island setting and fortifications. Ezekiel speaks during the period when Babylon dominated the Levant and pressured coastal cities, with long sieges and shifting control of ports and trade routes. In that world, a conquest commonly meant not only political submission but also the seizure of goods, dismantling of defenses, and reuse of building materials for military needs. The imagery of debris thrown into the water fits a coastal target and communicates a thorough undoing of the city’s built environment and public life.
Theological Significance
These verses portray Tyre’s collapse as total reversal: a wealthy trade center becomes a stripped, silent ruin.
