Entering the temple and measuring the doorposts The guide brings Ezekiel into the temple building and measures the doorway posts. Each side is six cubits wide. The text compares this total breadth to “the tent,” using an older sanctuary term to orient the reader to recognized sacred-space proportions.
Measuring the entrance and the main room Next the entrance opening is measured as ten cubits wide, with five cubits on each side area. Then the guide measures the room itself: forty cubits long and twenty cubits wide. The movement is from doorway details to the main interior space.
Moving inward to the next doorway The guide then goes farther inward (beyond the first room) and measures a second set of doorway features: posts of two cubits, an entrance depth/measurement of six cubits, and an entrance width of seven cubits. The reduced numbers mark a transition into a more restricted inner zone.
Literary Context
These verses sit inside Ezekiel’s extended vision of a restored temple complex (Ezekiel 40–48), where a heavenly guide leads the prophet step by step through gates, courts, and buildings while recording exact dimensions. Immediately before this, the guide has been measuring parts of the approach and entry areas to the temple building (the exterior access leading into the structure). Now the focus shifts from courts and thresholds to the interior rooms of the temple itself: first the main sanctuary room, then the inner room beyond it, climaxing in a spoken identification of what that inner room represents.
Historical Context
Ezekiel is a priest-prophet living among Judean exiles under Babylonian rule in the early sixth century BC. Jerusalem and its temple were damaged and ultimately destroyed by Babylon, and many leaders and skilled workers were deported. In that setting, a detailed vision of a temple with careful measurements would speak to questions of communal identity, space, and ordered worship life in a world where the old central sanctuary was gone. The measuring also reflects familiar ancient Near Eastern practices where important structures were surveyed and specified to mark their intended form and use.

Others think at least one of the entrance measures (especially in v.3) is the “depth” of the entry passage, because the wording shifts and the guide is moving inward.
How “before the temple” locates the inner room (v.4). Some take it as a simple orientation: the inner room is situated in front of (i.e., at the inner end facing) the main sanctuary room. Others think it clarifies that the measurements are taken from the perspective of the larger temple room Ezekiel is standing in.
Why the disagreement exists The passage uses compact architectural phrasing, and English translations can differ in how they render the same terms for “entrance,” “side,” “breadth/width,” and spatial markers. The vision narrative also moves Ezekiel through spaces quickly, so readers must infer a floorplan from brief notes.
What this passage clearly contributes These verses establish the temple’s inner progression: from a larger main room (40 by 20 cubits) to a smaller, perfectly square inner room (20 by 20 cubits) that is explicitly designated the most holy place. The text also highlights controlled access: the guide goes inward while measuring each threshold and doorway. In the wider vision (Ezekiel 40–48), this supports the theme that sacred space is carefully defined and that holiness is expressed through ordered boundaries and named zones, not only through decorations or rituals.
