A direct rebuke to Israel God tells Ezekiel to speak to “the rebellious” house of Israel and to say that their “abominations” have gone far enough. The verse sets the tone: this is not a neutral policy statement but a confrontation meant to stop repeated wrongdoing.
What they did, and why it counts as profaning the sanctuary Israel is accused of bringing foreigners into God’s sanctuary. These foreigners are described as uncircumcised both “in heart” and “in flesh,” stressing inner loyalty and outward marker together. Failure of guardianship and self-interested substitutes Israel is told they did not “keep the charge” of God’s holy things. Literary Context
These verses sit inside Ezekiel’s closing temple vision (chs. 40–48), where measurements, rules, and roles define the restored worship space. Just before this, Ezekiel is brought to view the temple and its entry (44:1–5), and immediately after, the text expands rules about who may approach and serve (44:10–16). The unit in 44:6–9 functions as a corrective bridge: it looks back at earlier profanation, names what went wrong, and then states a forward-looking prohibition that frames the following instructions about proper guardianship and access.
Historical Context
Ezekiel speaks as a prophet shaped by Judah’s collapse and the disruption of exile under Babylon. In that setting, questions of identity and community order become pressing, including how to guard worship practices and who may participate. The passage reflects concern that earlier generations failed to protect the sanctuary and blurred boundaries between Israel and outsiders. Who are the “foreigners”? Some read “foreigners” as any non-Israelites, full stop. Others think the target is narrower: particular outsiders brought into temple service or given privileged access, not every resident non-Israelite.
What does “uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh” mean here? Some take it as a double description—no physical covenant sign and no inner loyalty. Others think the phrase functions mainly as a moral-spiritual judgment (“not truly devoted”), with physical circumcision named to underline how far the boundary was crossed.
Who broke the covenant in v.7—Israel or the foreigners? The sentence can be heard either way in English: “they have broken my covenant.” Many conclude the main covenant-breakers are Israel (the addressed “you”) who enabled and institutionalized the profanation. Others allow that the foreigners are also included as participants in the violation, even if Israel bears primary responsibility.
The disputes come from the passage’s compressed wording. It shifts between “you” (Israel) and “they” (the foreigners) without pausing to assign each clause to one group. Also, “foreigners” is broad language, but the immediate issue is sanctuary access during offerings, which could point to a specific temple-management abuse.
This unit supplies the rationale for the access rules that follow in the chapter: past profanation requires a firm, stated boundary (v.9). It also insists that holiness is guarded not only by prohibitions but by faithful oversight (“keep the charge”)—and that delegating sacred responsibilities for self-serving reasons is part of the problem. Explicitly, the text draws a line: foreigners characterized as “uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh” must not enter the sanctuary, even if they live among Israel (vv.7, 9).
